At Birdtail Ranch, we make an effort to produce cattle that work well in our program and do the very same for you. Our cow herd runs on grass normally about nine months out of the year. We keep the cows at the ranch where we live during calving which runs about the end of January to early April. Then, the cows go back to grazing land between Simms and Cascade on Birdtail Creek. Their only supplement during this time is some cake during the breeding season in early spring and in the fall we provide a protein supplement prior to bringing them in for calving when we feed hay.
Our replacement females are weaned and then turned back on hay meadows. When necessary, they are fed second cutting grass hay and supplemented with 18% protein tubs. Then they are developed in a feedlot from December 1 to AI time, at the end of April. They are not fed any grain.
The cow herd is made up of primarily daughters of Vermilion Yellowstone, WCC Special Design L309, Leachman Right Time, TC Freedom 104, MW Universe 204 of Univ 939, Sitz Alliance 6595 and Hughes Farms Elijah.
Herd sires in use today include: Vermilion Yellowstone, TC Freedom 104, WCC Special Design L309, SAV Net Worth 4200 ,Summitcrest Startom 1S54 and Gambles Hot Rod.
The Birdtail Ranch Bull Sale is held each year the second Saturday in March with it being March 13, 2010 and the horses sell Labor Day Weekend with that sale being September 5, 2010.
Females are sold privately and at the Evergreen Exclusive Sale, Kennewich, WA; NILE Angus Female Sale, Billings, MT; Rocky Mountain Angus Sale, Ogden, UT; and Montana Supreme Sale, Columbus, MT.
